Summary0006685: News items should probably propagate down to sub-projects
Description

Let's say I make a project P and then create two sub projects P.1 and P.2. Then I create a news item for P (i.e. with P as the selected project), then only people that have selected P as project will see this news item. If one selects P.1 or P.2 the news item disappears.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Make a project PROJ
  2. Create a subproject SUB under PROJ
  3. Select "All prrojects" as "current" project (the selector at upper right).
  4. Edit a news item under Edit News menu (e.g. TEST ALL) and post it.
  5. Select "PROJ" as current project
  6. Edit a news item under Edit News menu (e.g. TEST PROJ) and post it.
  7. Go to "Main" page.
  8. Select "All projects" as "Current" project.
Only "TEST ALL"-item from 4. will show up. This is OK.
  9. Select "PROJ" as current project
Both the "TEST ALL" and "TEST PROJ" items will show up. This is OK.
  10. Select "SUB" as current project.
Only "TEST ALL" will show up. Not OK. IMHO both should have shown up (in addition to an eventual "TEST SUB" if we had posted it).
Additional Information

I think it would be better if this news Item "propagated down" to P.1 and P.2 as well, in the same manner as a news item for all projects will show up independent of what project was selected. When I log into Mantis I will automatically end up in P.1 (as per user settings) since this is the project I am currently most involved in. Then I will never see the news that is posted for the whole project, i.e. for P.

Reminder sent to: giallu

I believe what should be inherited from projects to sub-projects should be configurable. This should apply to versions, categories, news, etc.

Giallu, what do you think? It would be nice if we can include this into your news wiki specs.

Honestly, I tried for a while to use the project/subproject concept in my local installation, but in the end I gave up because:

  1. it introduces more confusion than information
  2. the concept looks flawed since it overlaps a lot with the
    category one.
  3. everyone has different expectations about how the various
objects in mantis should propagate between projects and
    subprojects

That said, I think the news rework we are planning for 0002077 will affect this issue as well, so I will note how the news will behave afterward.
